Fire Hose Reel Signage Requirements in Australia: Location, Visibility & Cabinet Signs

Fire hose reel signage guide

How fire hose reel signs are used to identify the equipment, mark cabinets and keep hose reel locations visible on approach.

Australian fire hose reel installations are tied to the National Construction Code (NCC) and AS 2441. The sign you need depends on whether the hose reel is visible, recessed, enclosed in a cabinet, or combined with other fire equipment.

01 — Compliance context

How the NCC and AS 2441 fit together

The NCC sets out when fire hose reel systems are required and, under the Deemed-to-Satisfy provisions, requires fire hose reels to be installed in accordance with AS 2441. The ABCB's referenced-documents table identifies AS 2441:2005, incorporating Amendment 1, against NCC Volume One E1D3 and Volume Three B4D5.

Because NCC adoption is controlled by each state and territory, always confirm which NCC edition and variations apply to the project. The ABCB currently identifies NCC 2022 Amendment 2 as the national online version, while adoption of NCC 2025 is jurisdiction-specific.

NSW Homes' current component requirements also direct fire hose reel identification signage to AS 2441 Section 10.4, reinforcing that identification signage is part of the installed system rather than a purely decorative label.

02 — Sign purpose

Location signs and cabinet identification do different jobs

Fire hose reel location sign

A location sign helps people find a hose reel that may not be immediately obvious. It is particularly relevant where the reel is recessed, inside a cavity or otherwise obscured from normal approach.

Our Fire Hose Reel (Red) Sign is the product family intended for this highly visible location-identification role.

Cabinet or enclosure identification

Where the hose reel is housed in a cabinet or enclosure, the enclosure itself needs clear identification. Public project specifications applying AS 2441 commonly nominate the words FIRE HOSE REEL in high-contrast lettering with a minimum letter height of 50 mm.

For this use, see our Fire Hose Reel (2 Lines) Sign.

03 — Visibility

A compliant sign still needs to be visible from the approach

The point of a location sign is to make the hose reel easy to identify before a person reaches the equipment. Sign placement should account for the normal direction of approach, recesses, columns, doors, stored goods and other obstructions.

Government and NATSPEC project specifications applying AS 2441 commonly place location signs above or adjacent to a recessed or obscure hose reel and use a mounting height of at least 2.0 m above finished floor level, or another height that makes the sign most apparent to an approaching person.

  • Check the sign from the normal corridor, car park or room approach.
  • Keep the sign above likely visual obstructions where practicable.
  • Do not rely on cabinet wording alone if the cabinet is hidden from approach.
  • Confirm the approved fire-services drawing or sign schedule before installation.
04 — Cabinets

Cabinet signs should clearly identify the equipment inside

Where a fire hose reel is installed inside a cabinet or enclosure, the cabinet identification is separate from any additional location sign used to guide people to the equipment. The cabinet wording should contrast strongly with the background and remain legible when viewed in normal building conditions.

Public Australian project specifications reflecting AS 2441 commonly nominate 50 mm minimum lettering for the words FIRE HOSE REEL on internal cabinets. Some project specifications increase the letter height for external cabinets, so the approved project documents should be checked rather than assuming one size applies everywhere.

05 — Product selection

Which fire hose reel sign should you use?

Red pictogram/location sign

Use where a highly visible location marker is required to make the hose reel apparent on approach, particularly for recessed or obscure locations.

Text cabinet sign

Use where the cabinet or enclosure itself needs the FIRE HOSE REEL identification required by the project or AS 2441-based specification.

One-line or two-line layouts

The physical layout can vary according to available cabinet space and the approved sign schedule, provided the specified wording, letter height, visibility and contrast are achieved.

Project-specific signs

Large developments may have a coordinated signage schedule with nominated materials, sizes and mounting details. Follow the approved schedule where one exists.

06 — Combined equipment

What if the cabinet contains a hose reel and another fire service?

Some cabinets contain more than one item of fire equipment, such as a fire hose reel with a hydrant or extinguisher. In those cases, the identification should match the actual equipment and the approved fire-services documentation rather than using a hose-reel-only label by default.

StatutorySigns.au already stocks combined options including Fire Hose Reel & Hydrant and Fire Hose Reel / Fire Extinguisher signs.

07 — Project checklist

Fire hose reel signage checklist

  • Confirm the NCC edition and jurisdictional variations applying to the project.
  • Check the approved fire safety schedule, fire-services drawings and specifications.
  • Identify whether the sign is a location marker, cabinet identification or both.
  • Confirm the required wording, letter height, colour contrast and sign format.
  • Check sightlines from the normal direction of approach.
  • Confirm mounting height and substrate before manufacture.
  • Use combined equipment wording where the cabinet contains multiple fire services.
  • Have project-specific requirements confirmed by the relevant fire-services practitioner, certifier or consultant where necessary.
